Railway is the environment friendly, safe and multimode transport

Bangladesh Railway is playing an important role in transport sector for the socio-economic development of the country. Considering the minimal share of contribution now-a-days in transportation sector, Bangladesh Railway regardless has been profoundly considered pioneer sector of modern transportation of this sub-continent since one hundred fifty years of its inspection. Present Government is prioritizing eager emphasis on Railways Sector in its perspective plan as it is user and environment friendly, safe and multimode of transport. The national policies such as Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) and National Land Transport Policy (NLTP) provide support for multimodal integration. Bangladesh is country with highly dense population and presently developing country like Bangladesh has no other alternative for mass transit and safe carrying passenger & goods other than Railway.

Bangladesh Railway is interlinked with the development for enrichment of life and progress of people of Bangladesh. Present Government has given topmost priority to Railway sector in its perspective plan as it is environment friendly, economic, safe and less energy consuming compared to any other mode of transport. At present Bangladesh Railway has more than 1159 Meter Gauge passenger carriage out of which more than 604 carriages are over aged and crossed economic life (Normal Life of carriages is 35 years) and more than 100 carriages are 40 years old. Physical condition of these over aged Meter Gauge carriage has been deteriorating day by day. So these carriages need to be replaced within sooner possible time.

Moreover, passenger’s demand is increasing significantly for which additional carriages are required to add to the existing fleet of passenger carriages. The replacement of the over aged carriages is essential as well as to introduce new trains with carriages having modern passenger amenities.

Under this circumstance Bangladesh Railway has taken the project of “Procurement of 20 Meter Gauge Locomotive and 150 Nos. Meter Gauge Passenger Carriages” under financed by Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) South Korea.

Newly procured Meter Gauge carriage will be used to replace the over aged carriages of existing intercity trains to fulfill the demand of the passengers with additional safety and modern amenities as well as well as to introduce new trains. The old carriages which be withdrawn from service may be used in mail, express and passenger trains for strengthening the existing rake composition. This project includes bulletproof state saloon for VVIP travel

Main Objective:
The main objective of the project are:
i. To procure 150 Nos. Meter Gauge Passenger carriages,
ii. To provide modern, safe and comfortable passenger service,
iii. To replace existing over aged passenger carriages,
iv. To meet the shortage of passenger carriages,
v. To operate new traine to meet the increasing demand of passenger and
vi. To increase revenue earning of Bangladesh Railway.

Output:
Procurement of 150 Nos. Meter Gauge passengers carriages will create positive impact on mass transport. Huge no of passenger will get the opportunity of safe, speedy and comfortable train journey resulting in enhancement of commercial and economical activities.

For the sustainable development of our country public transport should be prioritized. The noise and air pollution should be taken into account when designing and implementing public transport system. In recent years, environmentally friendly public transport relies on a green transport system for example green buses, bikes, taxies, trains. Green transport reduces people’s dependency on conventional fuel use in their vehicles and decreases pollution in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. In terms of greening the transport system research shows that dependency on cars have to be reduced and for this reason environmentally sound public transport system has to be emphasized. For being an environmentally friendly public transport system Rail is the most effective one.

Total contract price for 150 MG passenger carriages is USD 77781937.00 (Seventy Seven Million Seven Hundred Eighty One thousand Nine hundred Thirty Seven US Dollar only) which is equivalent to BDT 658 corer 81 Lac.

Nearly 50% of the existing meter gauge passenger carriages have exceeded the economical life of 35 years. The replacement of the over aged carriages is essential as well as to introduce new trains with carriages having modern passenger amenities. The project of Procurement of 150 MG passenger carriages was initiated for the procurement.

Procurement of 20 Nos. Meter Gauge (MG) Diesel Electric (DE) Locomotive for Bangladesh Railway.
Bangladesh Railway is accomplishing intended aiming by signing a contract with Hyundai Rotem Company, Korea for procurement of 20 Nos. Meter Gauge (MG) Diesel Electric (DE) Locomotive on 19 March 2019.

Main Features of the Proposed Locomotive
” Air Conditioned driver’s cab.
” Crash Worthiness designed to meet EN 12663.
” Horse Power of the Locomotive 2200 BHP (UIC condition).
” Power Transmission System AC-AC.
” Axle Load 15 Ton.
” Microprocessor control system.
” Fabricated Bogie instead of cast steel Bogie.
” Designed operating speed 100 Kmph.
” Environment Friendly. Exhaust emission standard UIC ll emission.

Total contract price US$ 80,345,380.00 (US$ Eighty Million Three Hundred Forty Five Thousand Three Hundred eighty only), per Locomotive Cost US$ 3.66 million.

Delivery schedule
Delivery to be started within 22 months from effective date of contract and to be completed by 28 months, within June 2021.
